Southeast Road Trip – Part Two

After we finished in Savannah, we headed to nearby Charleston, SC. I totally fell head over heels in love with Charleston. It has an absolutely gorgeous historic district and again, it is just chock full of important American history. We went to the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, which is one of the oldest buildings in Charleston. It was originally built on the water’s edge, and on the tour you can see bits of the original wall that used to face the water. The town has grown, and land has been added on, making the Old Exchange a few blocks from the water’s edge at this point in time. The Exchange is notable for multiple reasons, including the fact that it is one of the locations that the Constitution was ratified. After we visited the Exchange, we wondered around Charleston a bit, and enjoyed the beautiful, colorful buidlings, the waterside and more. There is just so much to see in the historic district! We were lucky to have another absolutely perfect spring day with lots of sunshine!

The next morning, we got up and boarded a ferry headed toward
Fort Sumter National Monument. The kids, and my husband and I, absolutely loved the ferry ride! The water was just beautiful. When we got to the island, we enjoyed a fantastic presentation by a park staffer and Zaida even volunteered to help attach the flag so it could be lifted above the island. I think that’s a memory she will cherish for a long time. After the flag raising ceremony, we explored the island and the museum. If you are in the Charleston area, I highly suggest this site, it’s another small site that’s packed with great history. We took the ferry back and hit the road again! We had a rather long drive up to Kitty Hawk, NC, where we crashed for the night. The next morning, we got up bright and early to check out the
Wright Brothers National Memorial. Admittedly, Kitty Hawk is pretty out of the way, but it was 100% worth it to see this amazing historical site. We were all impressed with how well it was put together, and the museum was absolutely beautiful. The kids loved getting to learn about the Wright Brothers and see some actual pieces of original flyers. But, it was COLD! We had to make an ’emergency’ pit stop to pick up some cold weather accessories.. oops. You always run into a surprise or two on a road trip, even when you have been checking the weather obsessively. After Kitty Hawk, we headed up to Chincoteague, VA. I was always a fan of the Misty of Chincoteague books growing up, and it was quite a thrill to go to a place I had read about as a child. Unfortunately, we saw no wild ponies out on this trip.. but there is always the future.

After we left Chincoteague, we headed to the official middle stop of our trip.. Washington, D.C! We rolled into town just in time for a sunset view of the Washington and Lincoln monuments. A little late dinner and then bed.. we had big plans for Washington the next day. I’ll be posting more from Washington D.C. tomorrow!
